Note:
Sidney Cooper was a prolific artist, and was arguably the pre-eminent British cattle painter of the 19th century. After initially working in the shop of a coach painter and as a scenery painter, he travelled to Brussels in 1827, where he encountered the work of Eugène Verboeckhoven (1798-1881), an experience which had an immense influence on his own subsequent approach. The present scene, depicting a flock of sheep peacefully resting on an open landscape, is characteristic of Sidney Cooper's compositions, and recalls, for example, his painting which sold at Bonhams, London, on 21 September 2022, lot 22 (£8,288), and a smaller work which sold at Bonhams, London, on 22 November 2022, lot 42 (£2,550).
