Lot 240
Description
William Hogarth, FRSA,
British 1697-1764-
Twelve Large Illustrations for Samuel Butler's Hudibras (a complete set);
etching and engraving on paper, 27 x 51 cm. and smaller, twelve (12).
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
Samuel Butler's 'Hudibras', published in 1662, is a lengthy poem satirising the hypocrisy of Puritanism during the English Civil War. In the 18th century it was often seen as an English counterpart to Miguel de Cervantes' 'Don Quixote'. Hogarth was attracted to its satire of religious fanaticism and made two sets of prints depicting episodes from the story.
