Lot 435

Description

Paul-Émile Bécat,
French 1885-1960-

A reclining nude with an attendant;

oil on canvas, signed and dated 'PAUL-EMILE BÉCAT / 1939' (lower right), bears old partial label for 'Robinot Frères & Cie' attached to the reverse of the frame, 97 x 130.2 cm. ARR.

Provenance:
Property from the Estate of Barron Hilton, Bonhams, New York, 8 July 2020, lot 13 ($15,075).

Note:
Bécat studied under Gabriel Ferrier (1847-1914) and François Flameng (1856-1923), the latter of whom, as a celebrated printmaker, undoubtedly had a strong influence on Bécat, who is probably best known for his erotic compositions executed in drypoint etching. The present work is somewhat less risqué than the artist's prints, instead depicting a female nude whose position in fact draws on a rich artistic legacy reaching back to Titian's (c.1506-1576) 'Venus of Urbino' through to Edouard Manet's (1832-1883) 'Olympia', which the present composition clearly recalls.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
