Lot 133

Description

Giovanni Battista Benaschi,
Italian 1636-1688-

The Execution of St John the Baptist;

black chalk, pen, brown ink and wash on paper, squared for transfer in red chalk, watermark of an encircled anchor, inscribed 'N Pusin' (lower right), further inscribed 'a=so' on the reverse (laid down), with a study of figures in black chalk on the reverse (laid down), 23.4 x 20 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 6 July 1977, lot 30 (as 'Attributed to' Benaschi).
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).

Note:
Benaschi was a prominent artist working in the Baroque and Mannerist styles, who studied under Pietro del Pò (1616-1692) in Rome. The present drawing dates to the earliest known decade (and lesser known period) of Benaschi's oeuvre, corresponding to his first active period in Rome and to the beginning of his first sojourn in Naples, which means that it can be dated to c.1650-65. A similar subject, albeit differing in composition and style due to the different use of the pen, is in a drawing preserved in Düsseldorf [Kunstpalast, inv. KA (FP) 10141].

We are grateful to Professor Francesco Grisolia for confirming the attribution of the present lot and for his help preparing the catalogue entry.
