Description
Giovanni Baglione,
Italian c.1566-1643/44-
The Circumcision;
red chalk, pen, and brown ink on paper, bears faint inscription 'trentaquattro' (lower right), numbered '34' (upper left), bears indistinct inscription verso, 14.3 x 10.6 cm.
Provenance:
The Double-Numbering Collector (their number and inscription recto).
with David Jones Fine Art at Derek Johns Fine Art, London.
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 3 July 2007, lot 44 (£2,280).
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Literature:
Apollo (Supplement), 'Master Drawings in London', 3-9 July 2004, CLX, July 2004, p. 509.
Note:
Baglione was a prolific painter and prominent art historian, who produced a number of biographies of other artists working in Rome during his lifetime. He was a rival of Caravaggio (1571-1610), who, nevertheless, exerted a significant influence on his approach.
The present work is a particularly charming example of Baglione's loosely handled drawings, which evoke a strong sense of presence and movement. A similarly handled study by the artist sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 31 January 2018, lot 136 ($6,250).
