Description
Giuseppe Simonelli,
Italian c.1650-1710-
Solomon and the Queen of Sheba;
black chalk, pen and black ink and grey wash on blue paper, bears inscription 'Simonelli' verso, 27.3 x 40.6 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 25 June 1970, lot 198 (as 'The Clemency of Scipio').
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Literature:
Giuseppe Scavizzi, 'Master Drawings', vol.37, no.3, 1999, p. 243, fig.7.
Note:
Simonelli's theatrical Baroque style was heavily influenced by the approach of Luca Giordano (1634-1705), under whom he worked in Naples, and to whom some of Simonelli's work has been previously misattributed.
The Queen of Sheba, who is believed to have ruled a kingdom in what is now Ethiopia or Yemen, travelled to Jerusalem to test King Solomon's reputation for wisdom. She arrived with a large entourage, carrying gifts of spices, gold, and precious stones. She then posed riddles and questions to Solomon, which he answered to her satisfaction. She was so impressed by Solomon's wisdom and the magnificence of his kingdom that she exclaimed, 'Truly, the report I heard in my own country about your deeds and your wisdom is true. I did not believe these things until I saw them with my own eyes, and now I know that you have surpassed the report'.
