Description

Circle of Sir William Boxall, RA, 
British 1800-1879- 

Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Mrs. John Dixon, seated half-length, wearing a a black dress with a white lace shawl and bonnet; 

oil on canvas, bears label inscribed 'Mrs Dixon / wife of J Dixon / born April 15th 1795 / Died augt 16 1871' attached to the upper stretcher bar, 78.2 x 65.2 cm. 

Provenance: 
Formerly in the collection of cotton merchant Peter Dixon (1753-1832). Peter, a merchant from Whitehaven, ran Langthwaite Cotton Mill in Carlisle and lived in Tuille House, a converted Jacobean mansion. His heirs continued to run and expand the business after his death in 1832 finally closing the business in 1885. 

Note: 
The sitter, Mary Tirzah Stordy (1793-1871), was the daughter of Captain Robert Stordy (1748-1816) and Sarah Hodsgon (1756-1828), and the wife of John Dixon (1785-1867), who served as an MP and High Sheriff of Cumberland in 1838. John Dixon was the son of Peter Dixon (1753-1832) and Mary Ferguson Mary Ferguson (1762-1814). 

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
