Description
Circle of Thomas Beach,
British 1738-1806-
Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Mrs. Robert Stordy, seated half-length, wearing a white dress with pink ribbons, and a white hat with pink ribbons and a white feather;
oil on canvas, 76.6 x 63.5 cm.
Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of cotton merchant Peter Dixon (1753-1832). Peter, a merchant from Whitehaven, ran Langthwaite Cotton Mill in Carlisle and lived in Tuille House, a converted Jacobean mansion. His heirs continued to run and expand the business after his death in 1832 finally closing the business in 1885.
Note:
Sarah Stordy, née Hodgson, (1747-1828) was the daughter of Richard and Mary Hodgson, and married Captain Robert Stordy (1748-1816) in 1790.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
