Lot 198

Description

Follower of Enoch Seeman,
Polish / English c.1689-1745-

Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Mrs Ewan Christian, seated half-length, wearing an ochre dress;

oil on canvas, feigned oval, bears label indistinctly inscribed 'Mary dr of J Cain [?] / md. Ewan Christian / 1677... 1728' attached to the upper stretcher bar, 75.5 x 62 cm.

Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of cotton merchant Peter Dixon (1753-1832). Peter, a merchant from Whitehaven, ran Langthwaite Cotton Mill in Carlisle and lived in Tuille House, a converted Jacobean mansion. His heirs continued to run and expand the business after his death in 1832 finally closing the business in 1885.

Note:
Mary Christian, née Cane, (c.1658-1728) married Ewan Christian (c.1651-1719) in 1677. Ewan Christian was a prominent lawyer who, despite residing in Cumberland for most of his life, had family connections in the Isle of Man, and was involved in the Manx Settlement Act, known as the 'Manx Magna Carta', which was passed in 1704.

Seeman was a prominent and prolific portraitist who, as court painter to the British royal family, depicted sitters such as George II (1683-1760) and Queen Caroline of Ansbach (1683-1737). The present work was likely painted by an artist familiar with Seeman's portraiture, and recalls works such as Seeman's 'Portrait of a Lady of the Fonnereau family' in Ipswich Borough Council collection [R.1985-79.29], or in another portrait of a lady which was offered by Sotheby's, London, on 5 April 2023, lot 91.
