Lot 196

Description

Follower of Sir Godfrey Kneller,
German / English 1646-1723-

Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Jane Clarke, half-length, wearing a white dress with a blue wrap;

oil on canvas, oval, bears label with later inscription 'Jane Christian dr. of Ewan Chr / br 1696 mr 1719 / Wilf Clarke Standing Stone / Wigton' attached to the upper stretcher bar, 75.8 x 63 cm.

Provenance:
Formerly in the collection of cotton merchant Peter Dixon (1753-1832). Peter, a merchant from Whitehaven, ran Langthwaite Cotton Mill in Carlisle and lived in Tuille House, a converted Jacobean mansion. His heirs continued to run and expand the business after his death in 1832 finally closing the business in 1885.

Note:
Jane Clarke, née Christian, (1694/95-1760) was the daughter of Ewan Christian and Mary Cane, and married Wilfred Clarke in 1719.

The present work recalls Kneller's dignified portraits of elegant society figures, resembling paintings including his 'Portrait of Doddington Montagu, Countess of Manchester' which sold at Christie's, London, on 7 December 2018, lot 182.
