Lot 114
Description
Filippo Bellini,
Italian 1550/55-1604-
The Virgin in Glory with Saint Nicholas and Saint Anthony;
black chalk, pen, brown ink, and brown wash on paper, 29.1 x 22.8 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 2 July 1997, lot 170.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Note:
Filippo Bellini was heavily influenced by the dramatic paintings of Federico Barocci (c.1535-1612), who was also from the artist's native Urbino.
Saint Nicholas, at the left of the composition, is identified by his episcopal dress, wearing a mitre and with a crozier on the ground beside him, whilst Saint Anthony wears the monastic habit, with a cross and an open book in front of him. The theatrical composition of the present drawing recalls a drawing of 'The Resurrection' by Bellini, which sold at Christie's, London, on 6 July 1999, lot 27.
