Lot 155

Description

Giuseppe Nogari,
Italian 1699-1763/66-

Saint Joseph of Cupertino in Ecstasy before the Cross;

black chalk on paper, bears inscriptions 'Bartolomeo Nogari in Chiesa dei Frati di Venezia' and 'Nogari' (lower right), 40.5 x 26.5 cm.

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 5 July 1988, lot 85.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).

Note:
A preparatory sketch for Nogari's Altar of San Giuseppe da Copertino in the church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari in Venice, commissioned in 1753. There are numerous variations in the lower tier of the painting's composition, as a result of the positioning of a statue of Saint Jerome by Alessandro Vittoria (1525-1608) directly in front of the altarpiece. The present work is therefore an interesting window into the artist's working process for this important ecclesiastical commission.
