Lot 109
Description
Ludovico Cardi, called Il Cigoli,
Italian 1559-1613-
The Resurrection of Christ;
black chalk, pen, brown ink, and wash heightened with white, 21.5 x 24.8 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 12 April 1983, lot 71.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Note:
The present drawing is a preparatory sketch for the lower section of Cigoli's painting 'Resurrection of Christ' dating to 1591, formerly in the Convent of Montevarchi in Arezzo, and now in the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art in Arezzo. Another, less fully-realised preparatory drawing for the same painting is hosed in the Yale Center for British Art [1973.67]. Cigoli also treated the same subject in his oil dating to 1590 and today housed in the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
The loose handling and animated sense of movement in the present work is characteristic of Cigoli's sketches, and can be seen also, for example, in his 'Apparition of Christ to Saint Peter' which sold at Christie's, London, on 8 July 2008, lot 26 (£79,250), and his depiction of 'the Dispute of Saint Catherine with Emperor Maxentius' which sold at Christie's, London, on 7 July 1998, lot 12 (£32,200).
