French 1715-1790-

Two studies: An angel appearing to a group of soldiers; and The Archangel Michael defeating the devil;

black chalk, and squared in black chalk on paper, the first 19 x 14.4 cm., the second 18.8 x 13.4 cm., two sheets on a shared mount (2).

Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, London, 14 April 1999, lot 77.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).

Note:
Cochin was the son of Charles-Nicolas Cochin the Elder (1688-1754) and Louise-Magdeleine Horthemels (1686–1767), both engravers, from whom he learnt the art of printmaking. Cochin himself was a prominent printmaker, designer, and draughtsman, who enjoyed the royal patronage of King Louis XV, having been employed in 1737 to create prints for every birth, marriage, and funeral at court, and also serving as curator of the French royal drawings collection.
