Lot 125
Description
Leonard Bramer,
Dutch 1596-1674-
Nimrod supervising the building of the Tower of Babel;
black ink and wash on grey paper, 39.4 x 31.5 cm.
Provenance:
The Collection of Sir John and Lady Witt;
Their sale, Sotheby's, London, 19 February 1987, lot 288.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).
Exhibited:
London, Courtauld Institute Galleries, 'The John Witt Collection, Part I, European Schools', 1963, no. 26.
Note:
Bramer was one of the founding members of the Bentvueghel group of Northern European artists active in Rome, to where he had travelled in 1616. The present work is a particularly fine example of the Biblical and mythological scenes which formed the artist's preferred subject matter, as in, for example, his drawings of 'Jacob recognising the blood-stained coat of Joseph' and 'Sara bringing Hagar to Abraham', both of which sold at Sotheby's, London, on 24 March 2021, as lots 47 and 48 respectively.
