Description
Abraham Bloemaert,
Dutch 1566-1651-
Saint Willibrord (recto) / Study of an infant and geometric shape (verso);
black chalk and brown wash heightened with white on brown paper, 36.7 x 24.7 cm.
Provenance:
Anon. sale, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 11 November 1997, lot 15.
Property of the Late Professor Eric Gerald Stanley, FBA (1923-2018) (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Stanley).

Saint Willibrord (c.658-739) was an Anglo-Saxon missionary who served as the first Bishop of Utrecht, and, as 'Apostle to the Frisians', became a patron saint of Luxembourg and the Netherlands. It was surely this role which inspired Bloemaert to treat this same subject on a number of occasions, including in a similar depiction of Saint Willibrord which sold at Sotheby's, New York, on 27 January 2010, lot 9 ($23,750).
