Lot 464

Description

Jean-Baptiste Olive,
French 1848-1936-

Vue du port de Marseille;

oil on canvas, signed 'JB. Olive' (lower left), 34.2 x 46.1 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection.

Note:
Like his fellow Marseillais citizen Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886), Olive is one of Provence's most iconic painters and an emblematic figure of the French marine art movement. He was particularly celebrated for his compositions of the sea, seashores and ports. His views of le Vieux-Port, in which the rendering of light compares to that of the paintings of Félix Ziem (1821-1911), are especially well-known, together with his 'calanques' (a local term for cliff-edged inlets along the coast between Marseille and La Ciotat).

The entrance to the Old Port of Marseille, where boats, fishermen and urban life are in motion, was a permanent spectacle and clearly an inexhaustible source of inspiration for the artist. Indeed, t
he present work is a composition which he conceived in multiple iterations. Other of his paintings are housed in the collections of the MuMa in Le Havre, the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Marseille, the Musée d'Orsay, the Fondation Regards de Provence and the Musée Cantini in Marseille.
