Lot 164

Description

A Brislington delftware charger, late 17th century, painted in shades of blue and outlined in manganese with a seated cat, flanked by terracing, within a border of stylised flowerheads and trailing leafy branches, the underside with a buff-coloured slip and lead glaze, the footrim pierced, 33cm diameter

Provenance: Property from a UK Private Collection.

Note: The present lot forms part of a small group of late 17th century Brislington delftware chargers, all of which are painted with a stylised foliate border of the same type. The charming depiction of a seated cat in combination with this stylised foliate border appears to be unique. All other chargers decorated with the same type of foliate border are painted with Royal subjects: four are decorated with a portrait of James II, two are painted with a portrait of Charles II, one has a portrait of Catherine of Braganza, two are decorated with a portrait of an unknown man (possibly the Duke of Monmouth), one is painted with a portrait of Mary II or Mary of Modena and three are painted with a crown. See Michael Archer, Delftware in the Fitzwilliam Museum, London, 2013, p. 8, and cat. no. A.5, for a James II dish.

This charger has been broken through and staple-repaired with large visible cracks rim-to-rim and around the well. Otherwise some minor firing flaws and light general wear is present.
