Provenance: Property of Cyril Ernest Vanstone Fullaway (1920-90), an employee of the Hudson's Bay Company from leaving school until retirement from his position as office manager in 1980; thence by descent.
Note: The Hudson's Bay Company was founded by an English Royal Charter in 1670 by Charles II. During the peak of its activities it controlled the fur trade throughout much of British controlled North America. A Candle Auction or Sale by Candle was a variation of the traditional English auction that dates back to the 15th century but became popular in the 17th and 18th centuries. There were two methods of this type of auction: firstly, the auction would begin when the stub of a candle was lit, and the last bid before the candle burnt out was the successful bid. In the second method a pin was placed about an inch below the wick and the candle was then lit. The highest bidder when the candle was burned down to the pin, or if the pin fell out of the candle, was offered the right to purchase the lot for sale. These methods were intended to ensure that no one could know exactly when the auction would end and make a last-second bid.
