A fine photograph of Sir Winston Churchill, by Edward Steichen, American, 1879-1973, New York, negative 1932, print circa 1954, silver gelatin print, laid down on card, mounted, signed and dated by Churchill in ink on the image Winston Churchill, August 13 1954, framed and glazed, 24 x 18.5cm
Provenance: Purchased by the present owner from Mark Weber, Catalogue 36 'Books by and About Winston S. Churchill', January 1995, item 6380 'A superb signed photograph [...] from the estate of Churchill's valet, Norman McGowan [...] signed and dated August.
Note: The present owner purchased this signed photograph from Churchill specialist bookseller Mark Weber in London in 1995. Weber in his catalogue noted that this photograph had been owned by Churchill's valet Norman McGowan, who wrote about his life in Churchill’s service in his 1958 book ‘My Years with Churchill’ (catalogue pasted to back of frame).
This portrait of Churchill by Edward Steichen was originally commissioned by Vanity Fair magazine in 1932.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.
It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods
Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain whether an export licence is required before bidding. Export licences are issued by Arts Council England and application forms can be obtained from its Export Licensing Unit.
