Lot 42
Description
After Antonio Rossellino, Florentine, 1427-1479, a polychrome composite relief of The Virgin and Child, 'La Madonna dei Candelabri' (Madonna of the Candelabra), late 20th century, the Virgin seated with the Christ Child on her lap holding a dove in His hands, against a blue backdrop with two candelabra festooned with garlands, the cast set in an elaborate Renaissance style giltwood tabernacle frame, the Corinthian pilasters, predella and frieze each adorned with Domus Aurea type grotesques, 125cm high, 87cm wide, 13.5cm deep
Note: Antonio Rossellino was one of a generation of Florentine sculptors, including his brother Bernardo Rossellino, Desiderio da Settignano, and Mino da Fiesole, who each followed in the steps of Donatello to innovate in the medium of sculpture in both religious and secular contexts, and establish a clear Florentine style in the fifteenth century. The composition of the Madonna dei Candelabri was unusually popular, with multiple versions in terracotta and stucco recorded in museums in Florence (Museo Nazionale del Bargello), Venice (Museo Correr), Berlin (Kaiser Friedrich Museum), and Paris (Musée du Louvre).
Condition Report
There are some restored cracks down the left cheek of the Virgin, across her neck and to the top area of her tunic. Further repairs to the blue area in the top right and the right cheek/chin of Christ as well as His halo. There has been over-painting in these restored areas.
The frame in generally good order. However, there are cracks to the friezes at the top and bottom. Nicks and scuffs overall. The right return of the frieze base has been restored and there has been a loss of definition.
