Lot Footnotes
The Meriden Britannia Company was a highly successful and popular producer of silver plate in America during the 19th Century. The company exhibited at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, 1876, and were awarded the first place medal for their plated wares. This piece is likely to have been inspired by Edward C. Moore’s work with Tiffany & Co. during the 1870s and 1880s. During this period, Moore’s designs were strongly influenced by Indian and Japanese works of art. The Decorative Arts and Design Collection at the Brooklyn Museum holds another example of this pitcher by Meriden Silver Company. A similar pitcher is also featured in The Illustrated Catalogue and Price List of Staple Goods, Electro-Silver Plated Ware manufactured by The Meriden Silver Plate Co. 1883, illus. no. 461:
