Lot 670

Description

International Watch Co. An automatic calendar wristwatch
Ingenieur, Reference 666A, Movement number 1375256, Case Number 1395595, Circa 1955
Jewelled Cal: 852 automatic movement with soft iron inner case, silvered 'Arrow logo' dial with applied baton hour markers and radium plots, gilt lume filled dauphine hands and with sweep centre seconds, screw on case back, stamped 18k 0.750, Swiss marks, fitted leather strap and original gold plated IWC incabloc buckle, case, dial and movement signed
36mm diameter

It was Albert Pellaton who was appointed as IWC's new technical director in 1944, who led the development of IWC’s first automatic watch. The 'Ingenieur', which translates as 'engineer', was originally launched as a 'tool watch', fitted with the calibre 81 or 85 (later the 852), an automatic movement which was housed in a soft-iron inner case for protection against magnetic fields. This calibre was their first two-directional automatic movement and was used by the manufacturers until the mid 60's. According to the serial number, this particular watch is one the earlier examples from 1955 containing the correct calibre 852, and the original ‘Arrow Logo,’ a Swiss thunderbolt icon indicating dangerous electrical currents.

Gross weight approx. 65.9 grams.

Please note that Roseberys do not guarantee working order or time keeping of any automatic, mechanical, quartz or other timepiece.

The case has possibly been polished over the years but case numbers remains crisp between the lugs

Dial is speckled ( visible under a loupe) and the dial has gently burned/warmed from the hands towards the centre. The luminous plots are intact and discoloured with age..

Watch is running when wound and powered but untested for timekeeping
