Lot 62
Description
Arnulf Rainer,
Austrian b.1929 -
Strauchkathedrale, 1974;
charcoal on photographic print, signed lower left 'A Rainer' and titled lower right 'Strauchkathedrale', 59 x 48.5 cm (ARR)
Provenance:
with Galerie Stadler, Paris, cat. no.10 (according to the inscribed label attached to the reverse);
with Galerie Daniel Varenne, Geneva, no.859 (according to the label attached to the reverse);
a Private Collection of Post-War Art
Note:
Rainer's work is typically defined by the process of overpainting or blackening of existing photographic or illustrative material. Here the artist 'destroys' the image of a nude figure, with the explosive marks of charcoal, imbuing the scene with an expressive, almost violent feeling. The work can be seen as an extension of the body art Rainer created with the 'Vienna Actionism' group and was particularly made in response to the destruction of Hiroshima and the Post-War age.
Rainer has exhibited widely internationally throughout his career and he represented Austrian at the Venice Biennale in 1980. His works are in international collections including MoMA, New York, Tate, London and the Centre Pompidou, Paris. There is now a museum dedicated to his work, Arnulf Rainer Museum, in Vienna.
