Lot 156
Description
A silver inlaid engraved brass celestial globe and stand,
Iran or India, late 17th-18th century
Unsigned and undated, no seam observable indicating it was made with the lost wax technique, the constellations inscribed in Arabic naskh script, about 150 stars marked by silver inlaid points, zodiacal names engraved along the elliptic, graduated meridian ring sitting on a graduated horizon ring and supported on a brass stand with three turned supports and central leg,
Globe 11cm. diam; with stand 20.5cm high
Provenance: Deceased estate
This previously unrecorded globe can be placed into class B of Emilie Savage Smith's classification of extant Islamicate celestial globes as it has no constellation outlines but has a significant number of stars (Islamicate Celestial Globes, Smithsonian Institute Press, Washington D.C., 1983, p. 213).
In the Islamic world, the globe was first made as two shallow hemispheres which were then joined together, the line of joint being marked as the celestial equator. A significant innovation was made in the construction of the globe in India, where it was cast as single hollow spheres by the cire perdue, or the lost wax, method. Qaim Muhammad of Lahore perfected this technique. Some thirty-three celestial globes made by him and other members of his family between the years 1623 and 1691 are known.
