Paul Albar (1724-1792) came from a family of Perpignan silversmiths and was the third generation of his family to work in the trade. He registered as a maker in 1749 before embarking on a Grand Tour of France. He is known to have made both religious and secular items, including the silver crown worn by the Virgin Mary in a group of figures from the Château de Cuxou (The Dormition of the Virgin) and a chalice from the parish church of Ille sur Têt.
