Gilbert Heathcote (1652-1733) was the eldest son of a Derbyshire ironmonger and following a period as a Factor in Stockholm established himself as a Merchant in the City of London. Heathcote was involved in many ventures and his commercial network extended throughout the Baltic, America and the West Indies.

In 1694 Heathcote was among the first to propose the foundation of what became the Bank of England and twice served as Governor of it (1709-1711 and 1723-1725). Heathcote was also prominent in the politics of the City of London, serving as both an Alderman and a Sherriff, and in Parliament where he held a number of seats at different times from 1710-1733. In 1733 Heathcote, a Knight since 1702, was created a Baronet. On his death he was reputed to be worth £700,000 and 'the wealthiest commoner in England'.
