Description

Of historical interest. A 19th century silver dessert spoon.

Mary Chawner,

London, 1837.

The Fiddle pattern spoon engraved with two coronets and crest for Hilaire Knight, sister-in-law (from 1829 to 1835) to Admiral Horatio Nelson and later wife to Jane Austen's nephew, George Thomas Knight of Goodnestone Park, 17.5cm long, approx. weight 1.3ozt

Hilaire Knight (nee Barlow, formerly Barlow and Nelson), 1791-1857, was the daughter of Admiral Sir Robert Barlow and married her cousin Captain George Ulric Barlow of the 4th Light Dragoons in 1817. Captain Barlow (b.1791) died, probably of malaria, in 1824 and in 1829 Hilaire married William Nelson (b. 1757) , brother of Admiral Horatio Nelson, who was 1st Earl Nelson and 2nd Duke of Bronte. Earl Nelson died in 1835, which made Hilaire dowager Countess of Nelson and dowager Duchess of Bronte.

When Admiral Nelson died on the deck of H.M.S. Victory at Trafalgar in 1805 he had, due to his international fame and prestige, been created Duke of Bronte in the Kingdom of Sicily. In the British peerage, however, Nelson had only achieved the rank of Viscount Nelson due to the scandal of his relationship with Emma Lady Hamilton, wife of the British Ambassador to the King of Naples.  On his death both his English and Sicilian titles were inherited by his brother the Reverend William Nelson (1757-1835) who, despite not being a national hero or even a well known figure, was promoted to being Earl Nelson within a year of his brother's death.

On 1st February 1837, Hilaire married her third husband, George Thomas Knight (born 1795) of Goodnestone Park (the nephew of Jane Austen). It is clear from these spoons that Hilaire retained her higher aristocratic status on her third marriage as she combined the coronets of her previous rank with the crest of her new husband. She died in Paris in 1857.
