Description
A pair of Charles II silver toilet boxes.
Maker's mark PM, probably for Peter Monger,
London, c.1685.
Of cuboid form, the sides later decorated with Chinoiserie scenes of oriental figures, birds, flowers and foliage framing vacant cartouches, the pull-off covers with foliate finials, 11.4cm high, total weight approx. 22.2ozt (2)
Provenance: Purchased at Woolley & Wallis, 17th July 2018, Silver & Objects of Vertu, Lot 765.
Condition Report
The boxes are in good overall condition commensurate with age. Some general scratching, nicking and minor pitting noted. Some wear and bruising to corners. Some thinning to sides indicative of erasures at cartouches. Evidence of former engraving to cartouches also. One lid fits snugly, the other is looser. Some bruising to corners of covers. Some wear to marks on undersides. Later engraved decoration is in good condition. Some small splits forming to undersides of covers beneath finials. A small split to the cartouche of one toilet box and a line of weakness visible to interior in this area. A few spots of old solder noted to insides of boxes in corners. Peter Monger (free 1681, died after 1703) was described as a goldsmith in the parish of St Ann Aldersgate. Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
