Description

A novelty Victorian silver letter rack. 

William Griffiths & Sons, 

Birmingham, 1896. 

Designed as a silver stirrup supporting six silver spurs, each with rotating rowel, the four upright spurs joined with silver buckles at base, the stirrup engraved with lion crest, possibly for John Bagnall Esq. of Water Orton, Birmingham, stamped with registered design no. 250691 (see images for original design drawing at The National Archives, Kew), 23cm wide, 12.5cm high, approx. weight 17.3ozt

The letter rack is in good condition commensurate with age. Some general scratching, pitting and nicking noted. Hallmarks clear. Heavier pitting noted to the stirrup above engraved crests. A small ding and small split beginning to form at base of stirrup on one side and some splitting also noted to the base of the stirrup on the opposite side. A few bruises and deeper nicks/scratches to horizontal spurs in places. One buckle is fixed in place, the others move freely. All rowels rotate. Overall a very nice piece in good condition commensurate with age. No wobbling, and all spurs are firmly fixed. Further images available to download via this link: https://we.tl/t-oDX1as5ECn

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500
