Lot 108

Description

Henry Bone, RA,
British 1755-1834-

King George IV (1762-1830) as Prince Regent, after Sir Thomas Lawrence;

enamel on copper, oval, signed 'HBone.' (lower left), inscribed 'His Majesty / London / May 1820' and 'Painted by Henry Bone R.A. / Enamel Painter to His / Majesty after Sir Thos / Lawrence R.A. &c.' verso, 17.3 x 14.3 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
Bone was a hugely prolific and successful enamel painter in his own lifetime, and was celebrated for his highly-detailed, sensitive portraits of prominent royal and historical sitters. Indeed, over the course of his career, Bone enjoyed the patronage of three successive monarchs, from George III (1738-1820) to William IV (1765-1837), including George IV (1762-1830), the sitter of the present portrait. Bone produced a number of enamels depicting George IV, both in his role as Prince Regent and as King, with the present work based on Sir Thomas Lawrence's (1769-1830) portrait of George IV as Prince Regent which is now in the collection of the National Trust at Knole, Kent [NT 129733]. Indeed, an almost identical version of the present portrait by Bone can be found in the UK's Royal Collection [RCIN 422344].
