Lot 51

Description

British School,
mid 17th century-

Portrait of a lady, half-length, wearing a black dress and a black hood with white lace trim;

oil on canvas, feigned oval, 76.1 x 63.6 cm.

Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.

Note:
The clothing of this sitter suggests that she is from the period of the English Civil War, in the mid 17th century. In its muted colouring and pared-back composition, as well as in the sitter's stance, the present portrait somewhat recalls Robert Walker's (1599-1658) portrait of Elizabeth Cromwell (d.1654), mother of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), which is now in the Museum of London [46.78/536].

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

VAT
VAT is not charged on the hammer price unless it is stated that there is 'VAT applicable on the hammer price at the end of the description. Buyer's premium is subject to VAT.
