Description
Circle of Sir Thomas Lawrence, PRA FRS,
British 1769-1830-
Portrait study of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Joseph Farington, RA;
oil on canvas, oval, 51.8 x 44.7 cm.
Provenance:
Private Collection, UK.
Note:
The present work strikingly resembles Lawrence's portrait of the artist Joseph Farington (1747-1821), which is housed in the collection of the National Museum of Fine Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina [no.2564].
Although many of Lawrence's studies are highly-finished, the somewhat looser handling which characterises the present work is evident in a number of preparatory sketches by Lawrence, including one which sold at Christie's, London, on 29 October 2015 (lot 170), and another at Sotheby's, New York, on 9 June 2011 (lot 102).
