Lot 182

Description

Jankel Adler,
British/Polish 1895-1949 -

Reclining Figure, opus 117, c.1942;

offset drawing on paper, signed and dated lower right 'Adler', 50.5 x 40.3 cm

Provenance:
with Gimpel Fils, London, GF2377 (according to the labels attached to the reverse of the frame)

Note:
émigré artist Adler developed a unique visual style of abstracted figuration, that was highly influential on an entire generation of British artist including Robert Colquhoun, Robert Macbryde, John Shelton and Franciszka Themerson. The fragile, spidery style of these drawings looks forward to the work of Tracey Emin.
