Description

Micheál Mac Liammóir,
Irish 1899-1978 -

Seated figure;

watercolour, ink and pencil on paper, signed centre right edge 'Miceál Mac Liammóir', 17.3 x 25 cm (ARR)

Note:
Although Micheál Mac Liammóir is best known for his illustrious theatrical career, this work demonstrates his rich creativity and talent in various artistic mediums. The seated figure, an actor wearing a bycocket and a vibrant yellow and green tunic, seems to be caught in a moment of relaxation whilst preparing for a scene.

Mac Liammóir founded the Gate Theatre in Dublin with his partner Hilton Edwards, and Daisy Bannard Cogley, and Gearóid Ó Lochlainn in 1928. Edwards has since been dubbed the founder of Irish Theatre. Mac Liammóir’s key success came from his one-man show ‘The Importance of Being Oscar’ and his role as the mocking, unseen narrator in multi-Oscar-winning film Tom Jones in 1963. Although homosexuality was never legalised in their lifetime, he and Edwards were described by Éibhear Walshe to be the only publicly acknowledged homosexual couple in Ireland and jointly created freemen of the City of Dublin in 1970.

Despite becoming one of the most recognisable figures in the arts in twentieth century Ireland, he was an english-born actor. Mac Liammóir moved to Ireland in 1917, whereby he successfully fabricated an entire identity as a native Irishman born in Cork which was unquestioned for the rest of his life.
