A Decisive Blow Against If, 2016;
oil on canvas , signed lower centre 'Harland Miller', 250 x 149 cm (unframed) (ARR)
Provenance:
with Blain Southern, London, BSL ref: 52993 (according to the label attached to the reverse);
private collection, New York
Exhibited:
Blain Southern, Berlin, 'Harland Miller: Tonight We Make History (P.S. I Can’t Be There)', 2016
Note:
this work was exhibited in Miller's first solo exhibition in Germany.
Also a published author, Miller's play on Penguin book covers has become as iconic and recognizable has the books themselves. Sardonic and humorous word play emblazon his large scale canvases, challenging the viewer on the title the might expect to read. In the present lot, the two letter word 'IF' challenges us to reconsider the existential question we are afraid to ask - 'What if?'. Drawing on the ideologies of Mark Rothko, Miller also recognises that colour can have an impact on how we interpret the title.
His nostalgic canvases of high and low culture have garnered a following, with exhibitions at White Cube, London, Somerset House, London; Kunsthalle Mannheim, Germany; and Institute of Contemporary Arts, London.
