Lot 39
Description
A Mughal-style hardstone wine cup,
India, 20th century
In the form of a peacock, the deep well with lobed sides, the handle in the form of the bird's head turned to join the beak at the rim of the cup, the eyes each set with a red stone, the exterior with carved detail to rim, the teardrop shaped foot carved with a flower and set to sides with a band of red stones and gold wire surround, the band possibly added later
12.1 x 4cm.
Condition Report
A repaired area can be noticed at the pointed end of the ogival foot affecting the foot and the very bottom of the cup. An un-repaired chip is visible to the base, near the floral spray. This may not be an independent chip but an unfilled area of the repair. Two points of stress can be noticed at the bottom of the cup. One of the point is at the centre of a V shaped off-white area. Those occurrences my suggest the inlaid stones and the gold set may have been added later to reinforce to set the repairs tot he chipped areas. A hair crack or vein is running half way down the body at the base of the peacock's neck.
The department would strongly suggest an inspection of this work in person before bidding.
