Lot 127

Description

An hexagonal painted and gilt wood ceiling,
Ottoman Turkey, 17th century or later,

Consisting of a tessellation of  polygonal sections around a central dodecagonal star with an attached gilt tulip shaped pendant, the border painted with a swaying tendril bearing carnations, tulips and rosettes, fair condition, losses, painted decoration chipped and rubbed in places, loss to gilt, some repairs, mounted on strengthened board, the hanging knop broken

129.5 x 131.5cm.

Provenance: Sotheby's 9 April 2008, Lot 299

The tulip shaped pendant is broken and provisionally repaired. It would require restoration to stabilise it. The different planks composing this ceiling are secured and reinforced at the back of the ceiling. The applied pigments are flaking and have lift off in places. Some minimal losses which do not affect the integrity of this work can be noticed overall. Overall, the decoration is in fair condition. The condition is commensurate with the age of the work and its former function.
