Lot Footnotes
Provenance :
Bonhams, London, 6 October 2008, lot 210
Note :
Having been influenced by Italian velvets in an earlier era (16th-17th Centuries), Ottoman velvets in turn provided inspiration for Italian designs at turn of the 20th Century, such as those of Mariano Fortuny. Venice, with its centuries of trade with the Mamluks and Ottomans, played a crucial role in the silk industry and a large number of Ottoman-style velvets were produced there from the 16th Century onwards, causing confusion amongst scholars. See Stefano Carboni (ed.), Venice and the Islamic World, Paris 2006, pp. 183ff. In this case, the relatively pale colour palette and smoothness of the voided areas are considerably different from Turkish work.
