Lot 68

Description

Two travelling knives, second half 18th century, with gold blades and with mother-of-pearl handles with gold terminals flanking vacant oval cartouches, one indistinctly marked, the other unmarked, in shagreen case, 18.9cm long and 19.3cm long (2)

These knives have most likely been matched together as there are small variations - the terminal to the knife with an unmarked blade is not the rose gold colour of the other knife.  There is also a very slight difference in size.
The vacant cartouches to the handle of the knife with the unmarked blade with areas of tarnishing and small bruises.  The blade of the marked knife has the remnants of a sticky label which needs to be gentle removed.
The shagreen case is knocked, worn and with two split towards the tip.  The latch does not engage as the lid is missing the receiving clip.  The hinge is very loose.
