Description

A group of knives and implements, 18th - 19th centuries, comprising: a gold and mother-of-pearl mounted folding knife, 19th century, with a gold and a steel blade, the gold blade with Paris mark for 750/1000, the steel blade marked MORETTE Jne Paris, the mother-of-pearl grip with vacant gold shield cartouche and scrolling foliage terminals, closed - 8.4cm long; open - 22cm long; a gold and mother-of-pearl mounted paper knife, unmarked, 15cm long; a Georgian mother-of-pearl mounted silver folding knife and fork set, in gilt-tooled red leather case, knife - 15.2cm open; fork - 13.8cm open; a Victorian silver and mother-of-pearl mounted folding knife, Cronin & Wheeler, Birmingham, 1853, the mother-of-pearl grip engraved with flowers and foliage, the silver blade with scrolling foliate engraved decoration, open - 15.7cm long; a folding knife with mother-of-pearl handle, white metal collar and gold blade, engraved with monogram to each side, unmarked, open - 16.3cm long; a small gold-mounted tortoiseshell folding fruit knife, with unmarked blade, assumed silver, 13.6cm long; a gold-mounted tortoiseshell implement, with metal blade, assumed steel - 12.4cm long; and three associated cases (lot)

The first described (folding fruit knife): one side with a crack to the mother-of-pearl across the width and the other side with a crack across the top of the shield.  The is same side is lifting slightly.  The steel blade is tarnished with some flea-bite nicks to the blade near the tip.  The gold blade with light surface abrasions.
The paper knife: missing a mount to one side of the handle.  A flea bite dent to one side of the blade.  The blade is also very slightly bent.
The silver-mounted knife and fork set: one side of the fork handle with a horizontal hairline fracture to the mother-of-pearl.  Typical tarnishing.  The red leather case with wear and small losses, especially to the corners.
Cronin & Wheeler folding knife: good condition with wear, tear and tarnishing consistent with age and use.
Folding knife with mother-of-pearl handle: light ingrained dirt to the carving of the handle.  The cutting edge of the blade with a tiny dent.  Wear and tear consistent with age and use.
The tortoiseshell handle fruit knife: some of the gold inlay is missing to the handle.  The blade does not fully sit in the handle when shut.
The tortoiseshell handle implement: one side of the handle with losses to the tortoiseshell around the pin by the hinge.   Tiny losses in one or two other places.  The blade is tarnished.

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500

Export of goods

Buyers intending to export goods should ascertain whether an export licence is required before bidding. Export licences are issued by Arts Council England and application forms can be obtained from its Export Licensing Unit.
