Lot 89

Description

A French gilt-tooled and embossed leather jewellery box, late 19th / early 20th century, decorated in Japonisme taste, the lid and sides with panels of foliate landscapes and exotic birds enclosed by Greek key borders, gilt-metal escutcheon and key, the lock stamped SUSSE-PARIS, the hinged lid and front opening to a three-tier compartment interior lined in red velvet, each drawer decorated with vases and flowers, the two short drawers opening to the sides, 16.8cm high, 32cm wide, 22cm deep

The exterior of the box with some heavy wear to the leather revealing the wood frame underneath, particularly to the corners and edges and to the front and top. The escutcheon is held somewhat loosely in place with two pins and would benefit from re-fitting.  The lid and front panel opens smoothly. The interior is in good condition and smart, with bright colours to the leather and velvet lining, and general light wear including small marks and surface dirt. Despite the wear to the leather this is a smart jewellery box which presents well on first impression.
