Lot 53
Description
A South German polychrome limewood group of the Virgin and Child with St Anne (Anna Selbdritt), probably Schwabian or Bavarian, early 16th century, 92cm high
Condition Report
The condition of this high relief figure group is consistent with its age and expected wear over five centuries. The back has been roughly hollowed out with an iron bar support to the lower back. There is old woodworm present throughout the lot and overall surface wear. The child's right arm has been re-glued in place, and there are old losses to the toes on his left foot. There are some small losses and cracks to the face and headdress of St Anne, and several large cracks to her red drapery. There are chips to edges, including to front of St Anne's headdress. There is some white residue to the top of St Anne's head. The polychromy has multiple losses throughout the sculpture. Nonetheless the overall presentation of the group is good and the wear if anything adds to the impression of great age.

Lot Footnotes
Note: The cult of the Virgin Marys mother grew intensely during the 15th century, and in 1481 Saint Anne was included in the Roman church calendar. This prompted a rise in the popularity of the trinity motif of Saint Anne, the Virgin and the Christ Child, referred to by the German term Anna Selbdritt in the visual arts.
