Lot Footnotes
Note: Lady Ethel Alice Chivers Harris (neé Bower) (1867-1933) was the daughter of Edward Chivers Bower JP (1827-1896) of Broxholme, Scarborough, Yorkshire. She reportedly studied at the National Art Training School (Royal College of Art) in the 1890s and moved to London after the death of her father in 1896 and began exhibiting sculpture as Ethel Bower. She married barrister Henry Percy Harris in 1908, and continued to practice as an artist, first as Ethel A.C. Harris and then as Lady Harris, when her husband was knighted in 1917. She principally worked as a medallist, exhibiting over seventy medals and medallions at the Royal Academy between 1901-22.
John Roddam Spencer Stanhope (1829-1908) was an English artist associated with Edward Burne-Jones and George Frederic Watts and often regarded as a second-wave pre-Raphaelite. He was the uncle and teacher of artist Evelyn de Morgan (1855-1919).
