Lot Footnotes
Note: Although similar in appearance to a Senior Monarch, this gramophone is an earlier, smaller model, shown in a German catalogue of November 1903 as 'Style 11'. The ‘honeysuckle’ case was used in the UK for the single and triple spring models at that time, but not for the double-spring Monarch. Many Russian market machines came from the Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd subsidiary factory in Germany, as is the case with this example. Most likely a brass horn was originally attached to this model, as oak horns were introduced only in 1908 as upgrades to pre-existing models. The "gooseneck" style of tone arm was optional in 1903 but soon became standard issue. The original soundbox for this gramophone would probably have been a Gramophone & Typewriter Ltd 'Exhibition' model. Fyodor Ivanovich Polovnikov founded his own accordion production in Vyatka, and his children - Nikolai, Mikhail and Ivan - moved the production from Vyatka to Kazan in 1883. In the same year, the first music store in Kazan, the Trading House of the Polovnikov Brothers, opened on Bolshaya Prolomnaya, and continued trading until 1934 when the shop changed name to the Kazan Accordion Factory.
We are grateful to Christopher Proudfoot, Mechanical Music Specialist, for his advice on the catalogue description and footnote.
