Lot 137
Description
A pair of gilt-bronze mounted Sèvres-style ‘bleu céleste’ two-handled pot-pourri vases and covers, mid-19th century, each reserved with two oval panels, the fronts painted with interior still life vignettes of cut flowers in a vase and in a basket, the reverses with exterior vignettes of growing flowers, within gilt foliate cartouches surrounded by arabesques, the angular handles with scrolling upper terminals, the waisted necks with trophies below mounted rims chased with ovolo ornament, the socle feet with scroll and diaper panels, on square plinth bases, the covers with pierced grapevine decoration below bud finials, 44cm high (2)
Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen, anonymous sale, lot 972 (paper labels).
Condition Report
The principal condition issue is the wear to the gilding – this is primarily to the trophies at the necks and to the cartouches around the painted panels. There is a scratch to the enamels of the vignette with a vase (to the background of the vignette) and on the other vase there is a very short scratch to the enamels of the vignette with a basket (in a similar location, to the background of the vignette). There are some small, darkened areas on the gilt handles (particularly to the edges) which may be an attempt to re-touch areas of wear to the gilding, or they may just be dirt. In addition, on one the circular feet (to the gilt band border) there is a firing fault (which looks like small indented cracks), and there is another to one of the handles (towards the base of the handle) – these are all minor and date from the time of manufacture. The gadrooned ormolu discs to the lower part (at the join with the socles) are a little out of alignment.
