Lot 138

Description

Five Sèvres-style blue-ground cabinet-plates, late 19th / early 20th century, pseudo-Sèvres interlaced L marks, Louis-Philippe cyphers and iron-red chateau marks, each decorated with a portrait of a member of the French royal family named in gilt script below on the border, comprising: Marie Antoinette, Sophie Philippine Élisabeth Justine, Élisabeth Philippe Marie Hélène, Marie Thérèse and Napoleon I, each portrait bearing a spurious Delacroix signature, within circular gilt band cartouches tooled with lozenge ornament and one painted with jewels, the borders gilt with trophies and various French regal emblems including crowns, swords, sceptres, fleur-de-lys and interlaced L cyphers, each plate 25.5cm diameter (5)

There is a restored area to the border of the Marie Antoinette plate between 1 and 2.30 o’clock – this repair isn’t visible from the front to the naked eye, and it is only visible on the reverse because there are two short cracks from the rim which are visible.  Shining a torch through the border reveals that a far larger area than necessary has been applied with clear lacquer to disguise the damage – the damage appears to be a small linear area at 1.30 o’clock which is not translucent with a torch.  The repair is extremely discreet. The Napoleon plate has been broken across and repaired (the line of the break is visible on the reverse, but it is not visible on the front).
