Description

A pair of Victorian 9-inch library table globes, by Newton & Son, mid-19th century, the terrestrial globe marked NEWTON'S New and Improved TERRESTRIAL GLOBE DRAWN FROM THE Surveys of the most esteemed Navigators & Travellers NEWTON and SON Chancery Lane & 3 Fleet St. Temple Bar, made up of twelve engraved gores and two polar calottes, the celestial globe marked in cartouche with Greek key border reading NEWTON'S NEW AND IMPROVED CELESTIAL GLOBE On which all the Stars taken from the best Authorities are recalculated and accurately laid down Manufactured by NEWTON & SON Chancery Lane & 3 Fleet St. Temple Bar and below London Published June 1853, made up of twelve engraved gores and two polar calottes laid to the celestial poles, both with brass half meridian raised on a mahogany stand with turned column and circular base, approx. 36.5cm high (2)

 

Terrestrial globe - Extensively restored overall. The equator has an obvious repaired break. Extensive repaired damage particularly to Africa. Small losses and scratches to gores throughout. Discolouration throughout. Tarnishing to brass meridian. Base with extensive surface scratches and knocks. Turned support is probably later replacement. 

Celestial globe - Also extensively restored overall. Deep gouge to top with area repaired loss adjacent. Further small scratches and abrasions throughout. Repaired break to near the meridian to top and bottom. Continuous line of abrasions along the circumference to centre. Discolouration throughout. Base with extensive surface scratches and knocks. Turned support appears original with slight variation to the terrestrial globe.

Note: John Newton, 1759-1844, established the Newton family business in 1780, having been originally trained by Thomas Bateman. His son William, 1786-1861, joined the business at Chancery Lane.   

Buyer's Premium

The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium thereon of 26% up to £20,000 (31.2% inclusive of VAT), 25% from £20,001 - £500,000 (30% inclusive of VAT), 20% from £500,001 thereafter (24% inclusive of VAT). The premium price is subject to VAT at the standard rate.

(ARR) - ARTIST'S RESALE RIGHT

Qualifying living artists and the descendants of artists deceased within the last 70 years are entitled to receive a re-sale royalty each time their work is bought through an auction house or art market professional.

It applies to lots with hammer value over £1,000 as follows:
0 to £50,000 - 4%
£50,000.01 to £200,000 - 3%
£200,000.01 to £350,000 - 1%
£350,000.01 to £500,000 - 0.5%
Exceeding £500,000 - 0.25%
ARR is capped at £12,500
