Lot Footnotes
Note: This was the first book to introduce the Empire Style with its mixture of Roman, Greek, Italian, and Egyptian elements. Percier and Fontaine were Napoleon and Josephine's primary architects, and their work was inspired during a stay in Rome just after Percier had won the Grand Prix de Rome in 1786. The plates are of interior views, details, and exterior elevations to gardens. This is the second edition, published in the same year as the first, with only a slightly different title-page, and complete with the rare subscribers’ list. Millard I, 133; cf. Berlin Ornamentstichsammlung 2733 ; Cicognara 3822 (eds. 1798).
