Lot 403

Description

Sir Kyffin Williams OBE RA,
Welsh 1918-2006 -

Farm Mynydd Bodafon, 1950s;

oil on canvas, 56 x 76.5 cm (ARR)

Provenance:
private collection, Wales and thence by descent

Note:
this work is accompanied by a copy of a signed letter from the artist confirming the authenticity of the work, dated the 10th September 1998. In the letter, the artist dates the work to the 1950s and gives it its title 'Farm Mynydd Bodafon', which is in Angelsey.

This is a brilliant and early example of the mature style of this beloved Welsh artist, demonstrating the confidence of his brushwork and unique understanding of colour. There are nearly 400 works by the artist in public UK collections, mainly in his home country of Wales, most noticeably at the Oriel Kyffin Williams Gallery at Oriel Mons in Anglesey which opened in 2008. Williams has been described as one of the most significant forces in twentieth-century Welsh art, with his paintings shaping the style of those which followed. Whilst a senior art master at the Highgate School he taught future Royal Academicians Anthony Green and Patrick Procktor.
